I came across Leaves of Trees from my sister-in-law, Amy, who works at the Toronto boutique, being a kick ass jill-of-all-trades and am lucky to have been gifted wonderful products throughout the years. Before I get to the review of my favourite product so far, their EUCALYPTUS MINT DEODORANT, I want to tell you about the story of the owner behind the store—she’s truly an inspiration for young women. Dr. Roohi Qureshi, a medical based doctor with a masters graduate in chemical engineering. She came upon a cooperative of Berber women producing argan oil, on her 2009 trip to Marrakech, Morocco, thus sparking an inspiration for creating high quality, natural and fair trade products with science and design. She directly sources from Morocco still today, supporting a women’s cooperative producing hand-pressed organic Argan oil.
Locally, Leaves of Trees was recently part of the GEMxLOT campaign on International Women’s Day. They produced a limited edition orange blossom argan oil in support of Girls Mentorship, an group that empowers and inspire girls to reach their full potential. Each product sold went towards the campaign and daily they would post Q&A’s with women they believe are gems and an inspiration for young women. Follow their blog and social media, they’re content is always a good read and the imagery is beautifully curated.
The eucalyptus mint deodorant
Next up I want to try the deodorant Dr. Roohi has produced in partnership with the President of Pink Tartan, Kim Newport Mimran, the BOISÉ BY KNM DEODORANT. The scent description sounds exactly what I’d love, sandalwood, sweet orange, patchouli, and oud—not for any ‘shrinking violet’ as they say. Best part it won’t damage white shirts, which is part of my work staple.
Why is switching to aluminum-free deodorants better for you?
Promote healthy lymph nodes. Aluminum temporarily plugs the sweat ducts from allowing to perspire and breath. This just doesn’t sound right, but after trying many different deodorants Leaves of Trees actually works to reduce the amount of perspiration and eliminate those unpleasant odours.
Theorized studies have show aluminium may increase the risk of breast cancer. Thus affecting estrogen levels known for influencing the growth of breast cancer cells.
